Students taking courses online need to take a little different
approach to their education than they may have in a traditional
classroom. The following are some tips for success that may
be helpful for students:
- Before enrolling into Butler Tech Online, be sure you know
what you are getting into and are prepared for the requirements
of this mode of learning.
- Do not let technology be a barrier to your learning. Be sure
you have the appropriate hardware and software components and
feel comfortable using a computer.
- Be sure to get a good start. Attend an orientation session
as soon as possible after you enroll and make certain that
you understand how things work and what is expected of you.
- Be able to set a schedule for working on your courses and
be dedicated to follow it. One hour per course per day is recommended.
(You can always work more though!)
- Read directions carefully and do everything you are asked
to do. Be sure to listen to or read the script that accompanies
the presentations.
- Do not hesitate to contact your instructor if you are unsure
about anything!
- Read the feedback given to you on assignments by instructors.
This feedback can contain extremely important information that
can help you improve your grade or understand important concepts.
- Read any messages you receive through the course platform
message center.
- Re-submit assignments to get a better grade! If you submit
an assignment that is not perfect, take the time to read teacher
comments, fix what you did wrong, and re-submit it. Many times,
you can very quickly and easily make corrections that will
allow you to get a much better score on an assignment!
- Do lessons in order. The content of many courses builds upon
what is learned previously. If you skip lessons or assignments,
you will not have the knowledge needed to do well on future
assignments.
- Save your work! While most of your work is saved in the course
platform, it is always a good idea to keep a backup of each
of your assignments, just in case.
- Review your grades daily and keep track of how you are progressing
in the course. You want to pass the course and complete it
on time! Realize, though, that the "Due Dates" that
show up for you are more like "Target Dates." You
can always work ahead of these dates and there is no grade
penalty for completing assignments late.
Each course includes an end of course exam which must be taken
in a proctored setting. When you are ready for the exam, please
contact your lab monitor, counselor or the BTOL office to schedule
this exam. You must have a 65% for all lessons before scheduling
your exam. Taking the exam signifies that you are satisfied with
your final grade in the course. Once you take the exam, you may
not return to the course to complete additional work to raise your
grade
